The Snaefellsnes Peninsula of Iceland

The Snaefellsnes Peninsula is one of my favorite places in all of Iceland. It has some famous iconic places, as well as some lesser known but absolutely spectacular landscapes, towns, and of course, waterfalls. In this article we are going to see all the places I visited, and some I want to go back and see!

Kirkjufell Mountain

This mountain is probably the most famous landmark in the entire peninsula. It lies along the northern coast, just outside the charming village of Grundarfjördur. You can drive here from Reykjavik in about 2.5 hours. Next to Kirkjufell, is its beautiful waterfall, Kirkjufellsfoss.

There is a very slim chance you will have this place to yourself. As you can see, theres a reason its such a popular spot. Its absolutely stunning! I was there an hour before sunrises and had 3 other people already set up to shoot. By the time the sun rose, there were easily 20-30 more people to witness an amazing view.

This glacier-capped stratovolcano can be seen from just about anywhere on the peninsula. It is  located on the western tip and can actually be seen from Reykjavik on a clear day! The glacier is considered one of the world's main energy sites, which brings along many mysteries and superstitions. It is also the entrance to the underworld in Jules Verne's classic novel "Journey To The Centre of The Earth."

There are so many beautiful, unique churches in some of the most rugged, mind-blowing landscapes you will ever see around the peninsula. I was able to capture a few, but one that eluded me was the famous black church. I will definitely have to return to see it!

Djúpalónssandur Beach

This black sand beach on the tip of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula is such spectacular place to explore. From the mossy lava fields driving up, to the dramatic sea stacks lining the coast, this place is a must-see.

Hellnar and Arnarstapi

These 2 beautiful towns on the south coast have some breathtaking shoreline, and a beautiful sea arch called Gatklettur. And just east of Gatklettur, is some beautiful waterfalls dropping right into the ocean!

Finally, make sure to eat at the roadside fish and chips trailer in Arnarstapi! It was the best fish and chips I've ever had anywhere!
